Steampunk Camera
I wanted to build something mechanically complex that felt like it had a real history behind it. Steampunk assets are a great test for this because you have to balance imaginative machine parts with real-world believability. My main goal was making sure every single gear, copper pipe, and lens looked like it actually worked and had a functional purpose inside the camera.
The fun part, and the biggest challenge, was balancing all the different material surfaces. I spent a lot of time in the texturing phase breaking up the surfaces so the weathered leather casing, oxidized copper pipes, polished brass dials, and glass lenses all reacted differently and realistically to the lighting. Instead of just slapping on generic smart materials, I hand-painted subtle tarnish into the crevices and scuffs on the glass to make it look like a well-traveled, heavily handled tool.
